Is it becoming more common to breastfeed another woman’s baby? – Essential Baby – September 2016

Once upon a time, in an age where breastfeeding was the norm and formula hadn’t been invented, women fed each other’s babies. Sometimes it was a formal arrangement, known as wet-nursing, and sometimes it was just a case of any boob in a storm.

Fast forward a hundred years or so, and the idea of breastfeeding someone else’s baby (or conversely, having someone else breastfeed your baby) is something of a taboo. In fact, Cross-feeding in the 21st century is so taboo that when it is spoken about openly there is a bit of a hullabaloo.
